MUNICH - High-power white LED in the Golden Dragon series from Osram Opto Semiconductors are characterised by their particularly bright light and exceptionally long life. They provide concentrated light at 20 to 40 lm from an operating current of 350 mA. Depending on the application and ambient conditions, this white SMT LED (SMT = Surface Mounted Technology) will last up to 50,000 hours. The advantages of this point light source are particularly welcome in applications that call for high light output from a small footprint or that require light to be injected into transparent materials. Because of their impressive brightness they open up numerous new areas of application including general lighting. For example, high-power LED can replace small incandescent lamps, can be used for illuminating facades, can act as marker lights for escape routes and can light outdoor advertising to great effect. What’s more, the white version of the Golden Dragon brings the use of light emitting diodes in vehicle headlights a step forward. LED spotlights provide enough light for displays requiring high levels of brightness and are suitable for use as flash lights in digital cameras.

Like the available Golden Dragon of the red and yellow type, the white LED also lends itself to standard soldering processes and meets the high requirements of the automobile industry. With a chip size of around 1 mm², it is more than ten times as large as Power TOPLED and provides 15 times as much light. The sophisticated thermal management arrangements in the package reliably absorbs the thermal load of the compact high-power component. Samples will be available from September 2003.
