Controlling outdoor lighting: flexible, reliable and more efficient than ever

OSRAM's new electronic control gear range PTo 3DIM sets new standards in efficient street and outdoor lighting

With its new range of Powertronic PTo 3DIM electronic control gears, OSRAM presents powerful systems which in addition to their efficiency, robustness and durability first and foremost stand out for their wide range of potential uses in street and outdoor lighting. The electronic control gears come with three options for controlling and dimming: from controlling via an internal astronomical clock and traditional two-step dimming to integration into tele-management system via a DALI interface, the Powertronic PTo 3DIM offers the greatest possible flexibility. With the HCI-TT 50W/830, OSRAM also rounds of its range of corresponding dimmable halogen metal halide lamps with the proven Powerball technology.

Because - not least in the wake of the EU Directive on "Eco design of Energy Using Products" - street and outdoor lighting have to be more than merely functional, OSRAM now introduces electronic control gears that permit flexible dimming of the lighting down to 50% of the original output, thus making a valuable contribution towards energy and cost savings. Electronic control gears of the Powertronic PTo 3DIM range are available at output ratings of 50, 70, 100 and 150W. Thanks to their solid cast plastic housing, they are resistant to weathering, insects and impact (in accordance with EN/IEC 60598-1 Para 4.20).

The electronic control gears reduce energy losses by up to 50% compared with conventional control gears; they increase the efficiency of the lamps by up to 10% as well as their operating life by up to 30%. Thanks to their own average operating life of 60,000 hours and a surge protection of up to 10 kV, failures are rare, thus keeping maintenance requirements low. Because the control of street and outdoor lighting is complex due to at times considerable distances and a heterogeneous network structure, OSRAM equips the Powertronic PTo 3DIM range with three different control options to satisfy all requirements.

3DIM for unmatched flexibility

Powertronic PTo 3DIM electronic control gears can be integrated into telemanagement systems based on digital communication using a DALI interface. In this set-up, communication is transmitted bidirectionally, thus permitting stepless dimming as well as status requests of lamps and electronic control gears or the addressing of the electronic control gears. The integral astronomic clock permits the completely autonomous and stepless dimming of luminaires, either in accordance with predefined settings or programmed to individual customer requirements (AstroDim). In addition, there is the option of traditional two-step dimming (StepDim) via a controlled phase, in line with common practice within large parts of Europe.

Efficient in combination with HCI-TT 35W/830 and 50W/830

Powertronic PTo 3DIM works particularly efficiently in combination with the OSRAM
HCI-TT ceramic metal halide lamps. The metal halide lamps with an E27 screw base produce a white light, which gives a more premium appearance to illuminated objects compared with yellowish light. In addition, white light improves contrast sensitivity in drivers and pedestrians, thus contributing towards road safety. The HCI-TT 50W/830 lamps are a new addition to the OSRAM range. Their high luminous flux of 5.000lm is just as impressive as their average operating life of up to 18,000 hours. Both values are thanks to the proven OSRAM Powerball ceramics metal halide technology. All HCI-TT lamps are designed for use in enclosed luminaires. With PTo 3DIM, they can be dimmed to 50% of their light output; they are a straightforward option for upgrading from yellowish HPS light to brilliant white HCI light. To complement the range in lower output levels, OSRAM also offers a 35W system, consisting of an HCI-TT 35W/830 with a luminous flux of 3.400lm and the appropriate PTo 35W EVG.

With its PTo 3DIM electronic ballast range, OSRAM offers a sustainable and long-term solution for street and outdoor lighting. Depending on the nature and scope of the control task, the electronic control gears can be altered from one dimming mode to another, without requiring any changes to the hardware. The 3DIM control logic will become an OSRAM standard: in addition to the electronic control gears for HID lamps, OSRAM will also provide LED power supplies for street lighting fitted with 3DIM control options.
